Clydebuilt shipbuilding, in Glasgow, Scotland

"We could be shipbuilding...", as the song lyrics by Elvis Costello go.

'Clydebuilt', a word synonymous the world over for something built with precision and expertise, and linked to the great industrial shipyards of Glasgow' River Clyde in Scotland.

Where once the klaxons rang, hammers struck and welder's sparks flew, all along the river banks in the multitude of shipyards, now the sounds are much quieter. They're still there, but you have to listen more carefully against the rushing of the wind and patter of the rain. There are less shipyards these days, but the vessels they build are still regarded as Clydebuilt, just like the men and women proudly working in the yards.
